Unhappy Endings

I’ve only known unhappy endings,
Where the hero dies and leaves
You hurting.
So I wonder how long it will take
For me to destroy the happiest
Thing I’ve known.
I wonder how long it will take
For my insecurities to burn off
Every bridge I’ve ever built.
For self-doubt to drive out every
Bit of rationale and find a home
For itself in my unhappy little heart.

I’ve never known happily ever afters,
Where the hero stays and gives
You forever.
So I wonder how long it will take
For you to decide I’m not good
Enough for you.
I wonder how long it will take
Before you grow tired of the constant
Reassurance of my fears.
For you to ask yourself if I am
In fact worth the trouble or if
You’re better off alone.

I’ve only known unhappy endings,
Where the hero dies and leaves
You hurting.
So I wonder how long it will take
Before you leave me too.
