Chasing Perfection

I’m not perfect –
Not even close.
I chase this vision
Of myself –
The perfect me,
The ideal me.
But I always fall short.

Some days
I’m not pretty enough.
My face doesn’t
Look beautiful
Without any makeup on,
My hair sometimes
Doesn’t sit in place.

Some days
I’m not smart enough.
My grades weren’t what
I had hoped for,
My hard work sometimes
Goes unrewarded.

Some days
I’m not skinny enough.
My poor stomach
Feels as unwanted as I do
Looking at myself in the mirror.

Some days
I’m just not good enough.
I wonder if I’m ever
Going to be happy and content.
If I’ll ever stop hating myself.
If I’ll ever learn to be kind to myself.
